president obama heads to colorado to push for new gun control legislation. but he's coming under some serious fire for using decades-old information to sell a key part of his plan. we're live from washington. >> president obama barack obama continues his pressure campaign on a reluctant congress to pass federal gun control legislation. he's heading to colorado to meet with police and local lawmakers displaying a gun control package signed into law by governor john hick looper, yet his arguments are supposedly full of stale statistics. 40% of all gun purchases were made without a background check, but that number is almost 20 years old. >> why wouldn't we want to make it more difficult for a dangerous person to get his or her hand on a gun? why wouldn't we want to close the loophole that allows as many as 40% of all gun purchases to take place without a background check? why wouldn't we do that? >> that 40% bit was pulled from a study where 251 answered the question about where they got their guns. now we're hearing from groups like the washington gun association. members held a press

washington. peter? >> that's right. sources confirm the obama administration launched a broad push to get mortgages to people with weaker credit records and provide banks with a taxpayer guarantee that they won't make their payments. sources say the administration is working with banks, the federal housing administration, the justice department, and other agencies to help home buyers with lower credit scores, but who might not be able to make mortgage -- who might be able to make mortgage payments now, but can't qualify because the bank is still cautious and tight with the lending standards. critics worry is sews seeds for another financial crisis and taxpayer bailout. >> this is a bad mistake, and it was shown to be a bad mistake by what happened in 2008. we would not have had a financial crisis if we had not followed policies that were intended to increase home ownership by making financing available to people who otherwise would not be able to get mortgages. >> the boom and bust were not caused by providing 30-year fixed rate mortgages to generally qualified families. it was caused by

here in washington over the last couple of days now. you know, you've seen the obama administration, you've seen the pentagon take a very public stance really challenge the north koreans verbally and then the north koreans have ratcheted up. and there's a lot of concern that everybody's just amping up, you know, and it's pretty much going to slip out of control if everybody doesn't take a deep breath and step back. today, the administration, the pentagon, very much doing that making the decision that they will ratchet back on their rhetoric. not necessarily pull back on any of these military moves, but ratchet back the public rhetoric and hope that they can cool down this whole thing. >> all right. barbara, thanks so much. barbara starr there. >>> get more perspective on what is happening in north korea, the abilities as well as intentions in ramping up this aggressive posturing, an expert from columbia university, thanks for joining us. what do you think of the pentagon and change in posture that they're going to be stepping back from the rhetoric. do you think that's a good idea?
